I used to hand a client a finished composite and feel that quiet dread when they emailed back asking for the shadows to be “a little warmer.” If I had shot the source images in JPEG, that request was a problem. The shadow data was baked in, compressed, and partially gone. If I had shot RAW, it was a two-minute fix in Camera Raw before I even opened Photoshop. I learned that lesson early enough in my career that it reshaped how I approach every project, and it is the first thing I tell students who are frustrated with edits that fall apart at the final stage.

What a RAW File Actually Is (and Why It Is Not Just a Big JPEG)

A RAW file is not a photo in the traditional sense. It is raw sensor data, captured before your camera applies any sharpening, contrast, noise reduction, or white balance. Your camera’s processor has not touched it. A JPEG, by contrast, is the result of your camera making dozens of decisions for you and then compressing the result with lossy compression, typically at an 8-bit depth.

RAW files are usually 12-bit or 14-bit. That difference is not minor. An 8-bit image holds 256 tonal values per channel. A 14-bit RAW file holds 16,384. When you try to recover a blown highlight or lift a crushed shadow in a JPEG, you are stretching data that barely exists. In a RAW file, that data is sitting there waiting. The practical result is that you can often pull back two full stops of overexposed sky in Camera Raw without the image falling apart.

Opening RAW Files in Photoshop: Camera Raw Is Your First Editor

When you open a RAW file (.CR3, .ARW, .NEF, .RAF, and dozens of others), Photoshop routes it automatically through Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). Think of ACR as a non-destructive staging area. Nothing you do here changes the original file. Every adjustment is stored as metadata in a sidecar .XMP file or inside a .DNG.

Start with these adjustments in this order. First, set your white balance. Use the eyedropper tool on a neutral gray point in the image if you have one, or adjust Temperature (in Kelvin) and Tint manually. For portraits shot indoors under tungsten light, I typically land between 3200K and 3800K. Second, adjust Exposure. Aim to get your histogram pushed as far right as possible without clipping the highlights - this technique is called “expose to the right” and it preserves the most shadow detail. Third, use the Highlights slider (pull it left, usually between -30 and -70) and the Shadows slider (push it right, usually between +20 and +50) to bring the tonal range into balance before you touch anything else.

After that, Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze are your sharpening-adjacent tools. Texture affects mid-frequency detail, great for skin and fabric. Clarity boosts contrast in the midtones and can look harsh on portraits if you push past +20. Dehaze is aggressive - I rarely go above +15 unless I am specifically cutting atmospheric haze in a landscape.

Smart Objects: Keeping the RAW Edit Alive Inside Photoshop

When you click “Open” in Camera Raw, you have a choice: open as a standard flattened layer, or open as a Smart Object. Always choose Smart Object. You can do this by holding Shift, which changes the “Open Image” button to “Open Object.”

A Smart Object embeds the RAW file and its Camera Raw settings inside your Photoshop document. If you double-click the Smart Object thumbnail later, Camera Raw reopens with every slider exactly where you left it. You can revise your exposure, shift your white balance, or fix a color cast at any point in the project without degrading the image. If you flatten it to a regular layer instead, that door closes permanently.

The file size hit is real. A Smart Object PSD built from a 25MB RAW file can run 400 to 600MB by the time you add layers and masks. Plan your storage accordingly and work on an SSD if you can.

When I Learned to Never Trust the Camera’s Preview

A few years back I was deep into a product shoot for a client, moving fast, and I was spot-checking my exposures on the camera’s LCD. Everything looked good. The preview on the back of a camera is rendered from the embedded JPEG, not the RAW data - and my camera’s picture profile was set to a punchy, high-contrast style that made every frame look sharp and well-exposed on that small screen.

When I got to Camera Raw, I found that about a third of my shots had highlights that were genuinely gone, not recoverable, even with 14-bit RAW data and the Highlights slider at -100. I had been trusting a lie. Since then I shoot with a flat, low-contrast picture profile so that the preview shows me something closer to the actual tonal range I am working with. I also check the histogram on the camera, not the image, before moving to the next setup. That one habit has saved me from rehoots more than once.

The One Setting Most People Skip in Camera Raw

Before you export or open your file into Photoshop, check the workflow options at the bottom of the Camera Raw window (click the blue hyperlink-style text beneath the image preview). Set your color space to ProPhoto RGB, your bit depth to 16 bits per channel, and your resolution to 300 PPI if you are delivering for print, or 72 PPI if the final output is screen only. Most people leave this at the default sRGB and 8-bit, which throws away the extra tonal information you just worked so hard to preserve.

ProPhoto RGB has a wider gamut than sRGB or Adobe RGB. You will not see all of it on your monitor, but Photoshop can use it during processing, and it reduces the risk of color banding when you are making aggressive curve adjustments later in the workflow.

RAW editing is not about fixing bad photos. It is about starting with every bit of information your camera captured intact, so that by the time you are working in Photoshop, you are building on a solid foundation instead of compensating for one that was already crumbling.
